How to check a Utah medical cannabis pharmacy
In Utah, only licensed medical cannabis pharmacies may sell medical cannabis, and only to people with a medical cannabis card and a matching photo ID. Look the pharmacy up on UDAF’s license lookup before you buy. If it isn’t listed as an active pharmacy license, don’t buy there.

1. Make sure your card is active
You must show your medical cannabis card and a valid photo ID every time you go to a pharmacy or get a delivery.1 A card lasts 1 year, or less if your provider sets a shorter date. You can see the expiration date in your account in the state’s online system (EVS).1
Before your first purchase, you meet with a medical cannabis pharmacist, in person or by video or phone if the pharmacy offers it.1 Visitors with a medical card from their home state can get a Utah non-resident card. It lasts 21 days, and you can get up to 2 a year.2
2. Check the pharmacy on UDAF’s license lookup
UDAF’s license lookup shows each business’s name, license type, license number, status, expiration date and county.3 UDAF regulates 15 medical cannabis pharmacy licenses.4
- Go to UDAF’s license lookup .
- Under Program Types, choose Medical Cannabis. Then search by the business name.3
- Check the license type. A store should show a Pharmacy license (urban or rural). A delivery service should show a Home Delivery license.3
- Check that the status says Active and the expiration date has not passed.
- To match the street address, use the Center for Medical Cannabis’s list of pharmacies and home delivery services .5
The lookup also lists growers, processors and labs. Those businesses may not sell to patients. Only a pharmacy may sell to you.4
3. At the pharmacy or at your door
- The pharmacy must check the state system before each sale to see if you have reached your limit, and a pharmacist must review each sale.6
- In any 28-day period, you can buy up to the amount your provider set. The most is 113 grams of flower and 20 grams of THC in other products.610
- The pharmacy gives you an opaque bag or box. Keep medical cannabis in it when you are in public.6
- Delivery: some pharmacies deliver, using their own staff or a licensed courier.4 When it arrives, you must show a photo ID and a medical cannabis card in the same name.7
4. Check the label
The label must say the product contains cannabis and show the amounts of THC and CBD. It must also have a tracking number, the ingredients and possible allergens, and a warning that starts “WARNING: Cannabis.”8 The container must be child-resistant and tamper-evident.8
A flower container shows the weight, the date you bought it, a barcode and a “legal use termination date.” That date is 60 days after you buy it. After it, the flower is no longer legal to have outside your home.9
Warning signs
- Anyone else selling cannabis. All medical cannabis must be bought from a licensed medical cannabis pharmacy.4 It is illegal to buy cannabis in another state and bring it into Utah, even with a card.10
- Pre-rolls or anything made to smoke. Pharmacies may not sell cannabis cigarettes.6 Smoking is not allowed for cardholders. A first offense can bring a fine of up to $100.11
- Chocolate or cannabis drinks. Chocolate products and drinks sold as beverages are not allowed forms of medical cannabis in Utah.9
Hemp and CBD shops are not medical cannabis pharmacies
Hemp products are sold under a separate UDAF program. Each hemp cannabinoid product must be registered. It can have no more than 5 mg of THC per serving and 150 mg per package. Stores may not sell smokable hemp flower or vapes, or sell any product with THC to anyone under 21.12
You can look up a hemp product on UDAF’s list of registered hemp products .13
If something doesn’t look right
You can file a complaint about a medical cannabis pharmacy, another cannabis business or a medical cannabis product with UDAF’s online complaint form. A complaint about a medical provider uses a separate form on the Center for Medical Cannabis website.1415
For questions about your card, call the Center for Medical Cannabis at 801-538-6504 , Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.15 If someone is very sick, call Poison Help or 911 first.
