Funding and independence
Money can shape what an organization says. These are the rules we follow, and what we publish so you can check.

How CHSA is funded
The Cannabis Health & Safety Alliance is a California nonprofit public benefit corporation.
We are not accepting donations yet. Here’s why. When we do, every gift will follow the rules on this page.
No funder can review, change or approve what we publish before it goes out. We don’t accept gifts that depend on what we publish.
CHSA does not test, certify or endorse products or retailers. That includes any business that gives us money.
Limits on industry money
We will limit how much of our money comes from the cannabis industry, and how much comes from any single industry source. We will publish those limits on this page, and each year’s results against them.
“Industry” means anyone who touches the cannabis plant commercially, and businesses that serve them, including testing labs whose customers are licensees. Money from people who own or work for those businesses counts as industry money too.
Money we don’t accept
- Industry gifts restricted to safety alerts, recalls, Verify pages, a future product index, or CHSA positions
- Money from unlicensed cannabis operators
- Money from any company that is the subject of an active CHSA alert or recall
- Money from tobacco or vape companies
- Payment for specific content, events, campaigns or positions, from anyone in the industry
How we thank supporters
Industry supporters are thanked in plain text only, on this page. They may not use CHSA’s name, logo, content or “supporter” status in their marketing. We never put a sponsor’s name on a public service message.
What we publish
We will publish:
- An annual funding report that shows where our money comes from.
- The names of our donors above a set amount. We will post that amount here before we accept any gifts.
- How much of our money came from the cannabis industry each year, measured against our limits.
- Every exception to these rules, with the reason.
