How to read a cannabis label

A cannabis label tells you how much THC is in each serving and in the whole package, who made the product, and what warnings the state requires. Label rules differ by state. A label is what the maker says. It does not prove what is inside. We start with California.

Start with two numbers

Find the THC per serving and the THC per package. In California, labels must show both, in milligrams.1 A package often holds many servings, so the package number can be much bigger.

For adult use in California, an edible may contain up to 10 mg of THC per serving and 100 mg per package.2

Then look for the warnings

California labels must carry the state’s universal cannabis symbol and a “GOVERNMENT WARNING”.12 Many also carry a Prop 65 warning. Our California guide explains each one.
