How to check a Montana cannabis dispensary license
Look the dispensary up in the list of licensed dispensaries from the Cannabis and Alcohol Regulation Division (CARD) before you buy. If you are not a medical cardholder, its sales type should say Adult Use. If you can’t find it on the list, don’t buy there.

1. Search CARD’s dispensary list
CARD tells shoppers to check its list of licensed dispensaries. It updates the list monthly.1 Only licensed businesses may sell marijuana in Montana. If a seller is not on the list, it may not legally sell.3
- Go to CARD’s list of licensed dispensaries .
- Find the dispensary by its name or by city. The list shows the licensee’s name, the city, the location name and a phone number.2
- Check the sales type. Adult Use dispensaries may sell to adults 21 and older and to medical cardholders. Medical Only dispensaries may sell only to medical cardholders.2
- Check that the name and city match the store’s sign or website.
By law, the list does not show street addresses.2 In some counties, adult-use sales are not allowed, and dispensaries there may sell only to medical cardholders.4
2. What to look for at the store
- A site certificate on display. It shows the dispensary’s name, address, license number and the dates it was issued and expires.1
- Open hours. Licensed dispensaries may operate only from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.1
- Required signs. These include “No on-site consumption of marijuana or marijuana products.”1
- An ID check. Licensed stores must check ID on every adult-use sale.7
Delivery: licensed businesses may deliver only to registered medical cardholders. No one may legally deliver marijuana to adult-use customers.5
3. Check the label and keep the package
Licensed products carry the Montana marijuana symbol, a QR code that links to the product’s lab results (certificate of analysis), a seed-to-sale ID number and the harvest or manufacture date.6 Scan the QR code to see the lab report.7
CARD recall notices list the product names and their seed-to-sale package numbers.8 Keep the package so you can match it. See CARD’s recall notices .
Hemp and CBD shops are different
A hemp or CBD shop is not a licensed marijuana dispensary. Unless the FDA has authorized it, a hemp product that contains total delta-9 THC can’t be sold to consumers in Montana.9 Synthetic cannabinoid products, like delta-8 THC, are banned. CARD says intoxicating products sold outside licensed dispensaries are a warning sign.10
If something doesn’t look right
You can report suspected breaks of Montana’s marijuana law, like an unlicensed seller, with CARD’s online hotline form.11 State law keeps these complaints confidential unless a court orders otherwise.12
