How to check a Maine cannabis license
Look the store up in the Office of Cannabis Policy’s (OCP) license search before you buy. A store should show a cannabis store license with the status Active. If you can’t find the store, or the status says anything else, don’t buy there.

1. Search OCP’s license list
- Go to OCP’s license search .
- Type all or part of the store’s name, or click its town on the map.1
- Check the license type. It should be a cannabis store.
- Check the status. It should say Active.1
- Check that the name and town match the store’s sign or website.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Active | The business finished the process and may do business involving cannabis.1 |
| Conditional, Jurisdiction Approved | The town has given its local sign-off, but the state license is not active yet. Don’t buy there.1 |
| Conditional | It finished only the first step of the state process. Don’t buy there. |
| Pending Conditional | OCP has received an application. Don’t buy there. |
OCP updates the search every Monday.1 You can also use the State’s licensing search tool : choose “Search Companies” and pick the agency “Cannabis Policy.”2
Every licensed business must keep its license, or a copy, on display inside.3 Ask to see it if you don’t.
2. If you order delivery or curbside pickup
- Licensed stores may deliver. Towns can’t ban licensed delivery.4
- The employee must check your photo ID and confirm you are 21 or older before handing over the order.4
- Only the person who placed the order can receive it. Someone else in your home can’t take it for you.5
- Deliveries aren’t allowed between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.5
- The order must come packaged and labeled the same way as in the store.6
3. Check the label and keep the package
Licensed adult use products show the universal symbol on the front, the words “Passed mandatory testing”, a batch number and the store’s license number.6 They come in child-resistant, tamper-evident packaging, or in a child-resistant exit bag.6
OCP recall notices list the batch number and show where to find it on the label.7 Keep the package so you can match it. See OCP’s recalls and advisories .8
Medical cannabis is not tested the same way
Medical cannabis in Maine does not have to be tested for contaminants.9 OCP suggests asking to see the lab report (Certificate of Analysis). Check that it is recent and matches the batch you are buying.5
In September 2026, OCP warned patients about a medical concentrate after its tests found too much butane, a solvent.10
Hemp and CBD shops are different
A hemp or CBD shop that isn’t in OCP’s search is not a licensed cannabis store. Its products don’t go through Maine’s adult use testing. A federal law passed in 2025 tightens the hemp definition starting November 12, 2026, including a limit on total THC per container.11
If something doesn’t look right
You can report a problem at a licensed business, or a bad reaction to medical or adult use cannabis, with OCP’s online form. You don’t have to give your name. Add photos of the package and label. OCP won’t send you updates.12
