How to check a Colorado cannabis license
Look the store up on the Marijuana Enforcement Division’s (MED) list of licensed stores before you buy. A store that sells to adults should be listed as a Retail Marijuana Store, with a name or address that matches and an expiration date that hasn’t passed. If you can’t find it, don’t buy there.

1. Find the store on MED’s list
MED publishes lists of licensed businesses by type, including stores, delivery and testing labs. The lists are updated monthly.1
- Go to MED’s list of licensed facilities and open the Stores list.
- Open the Retail tab. (The Medical tab lists stores that sell only to registry patients.)2
- Search for the store’s business name, its “DBA” (the name on the sign) or its street address.2
- Check the facility type. A store that sells to adults should show Retail Marijuana Store.1
- Check the expiration date. It should not have passed.
The list is updated once a month, so a very recent change may not show yet.1 MED also has a Licensee Look-Up Tool that searches by license number, name, city or county.3 It asks you to complete a CAPTCHA.4
A state license alone does not mean a store is open. A cannabis business needs both a state license and a local license from its city or county.5
2. If you order delivery
- Only licensed stores with an MED delivery permit may deliver, and only where the local government allows delivery.7 MED’s Delivery list shows which stores hold a permit.6
- Delivery goes to private homes only. It can’t go to a school, a college campus, public property or an office.7
- The driver must check your ID to make sure you are 21 or older and the same person who placed the order.7
- A store can deliver to the same person or home only once a day, and not outside Colorado.7
3. Check the label and keep the package
Licensed products carry the universal THC symbol with the words “Contains Marijuana. Keep away from children.”, the THC and CBD potency, a batch number and license numbers.7
MED’s Health and Safety Advisories list the batch numbers and the stores that sold the affected product.8 Keep the package so you can match it. See MED’s Health and Safety Advisories .
Hemp and CBD shops are different
A hemp or CBD shop is not an MED-licensed marijuana store. Under a 2023 state law, products with intoxicating cannabinoids may be sold only by MED licensees, with some exceptions for small amounts of THC. Many hemp products with more than 1.25 mg of THC can’t be sold to anyone under 21.9
If something doesn’t look right
You can report a possible rule violation by a licensed business, or a health problem after using cannabis from a licensed store, with MED’s reporting form. You don’t have to give your name, but you need an email address.10 If someone is threatening your safety, contact local police.
