How to check an Arizona cannabis license

Look the store up in AZ Care Check, the Arizona Department of Health Services’ (ADHS) license search, before you buy. To buy without a medical card, the store’s details should list an Establishment license with the status Active. If you can’t find the store, or the license says anything else, don’t buy there.

1. Search AZ Care Check

ADHS links its list of licensed adult-use stores to AZ Care Check.1 State law says ADHS must publish a current list of licensed establishments by name and license number.3

  1. Go to AZ Care Check and choose Marijuana Facilities.
  2. Search by the store’s name or address. You can also filter by license type and status.2
  3. Click Get Details on the store.
  4. Check the license type. A store that sells to adults 21 and older should list an Establishment license.21
  5. Check the license status. It should say Active. The details page also shows the license number and when it expires.2
  6. Check that the name and address match the store’s sign or website.

Some stores also hold a medical Dispensary license. A store with both may serve registered patients and adults 21 and older at one location.1 The Inspections and Enforcements tabs show the store’s recent ADHS history.24

2. If you order delivery

  • Only licensed stores may deliver. The order must come from the store’s retail location, and the driver must be an agent of the store using an unmarked vehicle.3
  • The driver must check that you are the person who ordered, check your ID and get your handwritten signature on the order.5
  • Stores can’t deliver to property owned or leased by the federal, state or local government or the Arizona Board of Regents.5
  • Your city, town or county may ban or limit delivery.6
  • You can buy no more than 1 ounce in one sale, and no more than 5 grams of that as concentrate.4

3. Check the label and keep the package

Licensed products carry the store’s license number, the strain and batch number, THC and CBD amounts from lab tests, and an ADHS health warning that ends “KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN”. Products must leave the store in child-resistant packaging.5

Each package must also have a QR code. It links to a lab report on impurities, the harvest date and where the product came from.7 You can also ask the store for the test results.5

Edibles may not be shaped like a person, animal, insect, fruit, toy or cartoon.8

ADHS posts a recall notice when a product that failed testing has already been sold.9 Notices list the product name, strain and batch number.10 Keep the package so you can match it. See ADHS’s recall notices .

Hemp and CBD shops are different

A hemp or CBD shop is not an ADHS-licensed marijuana store. ADHS says marijuana can’t be sold outside a licensed establishment or dispensary.4 Arizona law defines hemp as cannabis with no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight, and the Arizona Department of Agriculture licenses it.11

If something doesn’t look right

You can report a problem at a licensed marijuana store with ADHS’s online complaint form. It asks for your name, email and phone number.12 ADHS says written complaints are public records, but it removes confidential details before release.4
